Hops

Agricultural Yield

The Hops Surveys and Reports program consists of three surveys: the Hops Dealers and Growers Stocks Survey, the Hops Brewers Stocks Survey, and the Hops Grower Survey. It also includes several reports. The Hops Stocks report is published twice a year, in March and September. The data in this release are used for U.S. estimates of hops that growers, dealers, and brewers hold as of the first of the month. The National Hop Report is published annually in December. This report includes acreage, yield, and production, by variety and state, for hops. This annual report presents the area harvested, yield, production, price per pound, and value of production, by variety, state, and U.S., for hops, and notes changes in these values from previous years. Data from the May and August Hops Grower surveys are published in the June and August Crop Production reports, respectively, and include data for total harvested acres, yield and production.

About NASS Hops Surveys and Reports

NASS updated the Hops Surveys and Reports names for the 2025 calendar year.

Hops Dealers and Growers Stocks Survey

  • Hops Dealers and Growers Stocks Survey is conducted in March and September to provide indications of hop stocks on dealer and grower operations, in support of the Hop Stocks report. It is a census of all known growers in the program states, and all known dealers nationwide.
  • The semi-annual Hops Dealers and Growers Stocks Surveys include all hops grower operations with 0.1 or more acres of hops strung for harvest and/or planted hops not strung for harvest in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington as well as hops dealer operations in any state.
  • The estimates in the Hops Stocks publication are based on the surveys conducted during the first two weeks of each month. The release provides detailed estimates of hops that growers, dealers, and brewers hold as of the first of the month.

Hops Brewers Stocks Survey

  • The Hops Brewers Stocks Survey is conducted in March and September to provide indications of hop stocks at breweries, in support of the Hop Stocks report. It is a census of all breweries that produce more than 100,000 barrels of beer in a year.
  • The semi-annual Hops Brewers Stocks Surveys include hops brewer operations in any state. States in the survey can vary from year to year.
  • The estimates in the Hops Stocks publication are based on the surveys conducted during the first two weeks of each month. The release provides detailed estimates of hops that growers, dealers, and brewers hold as of the first of the month.

Hops Growers Survey

  • The Hops Growers Survey is conducted in May and August to collect acreage, production, and price data from growers. Information obtained from the hops growers surveys are used to establish estimates of hops. These estimates are reviewed for errors, reasonableness, and consistency with historical estimates and industry check data.
  • The National Hop Report includes acreage, yield, and production, by variety and state, for hops. This annual report presents the area harvested, yield, production, price per pound, and value of production, by variety, state, and U.S., for hops, and notes changes in these values from previous years.
Uses

Data are used by growers, brewers, commodity markets, educational institutions, state and federal agencies, and others for market assessment, planning, decision making and ongoing research.

Methods

Data are collected for approximately two weeks beginning the last day of the month prior to the survey reference date. Modes of data collection include mail, telephone, and personal interviewing.
