July 23, 2001

HIGHLIGHTS

The leading 2001 North Dakota spring wheat varieties were Russ, Gunner, Oxen, and 2375. Of the 6.8 million acres of spring wheat planted in North Dakota, the top four varieties accounted for 48.7 percent of the total.

The durum wheat varieties Ben and Renville maintained their first and second place positions from 2000 and together accounted for 48.9 percent of the durum acres planted in 2001. Munich remained in third place in 2001, while Mountrail jumped from eleventh place in 2000 to fourth in 2001. Over 65 percent of the 2.3 million acres planted were represented by the top four varieties in durum wheat.

Arapahoe took over the top position of winter wheat varieties with 27.3 percent of the total acres planted, up from 14 percent in 2000. Roughrider dropped into second place, accounting for 21.7 percent. Elkhorn fell from second in 2000 to third place this year. The top three varieties represent 66 percent of the winter wheat acres planted.

GROWING SEASON, 2001

The average starting date for fieldwork was April 29 this year, which was behind last year's starting date of April 17 and the five-year (1996-2000) average of April 24. Although the starting date was behind average, most producers were able to complete planting slightly ahead of average. Frequent rain and warm temperatures during June promoted crop development across most of the state. By mid-June widespread and heavy rains fell across most of the state. Due to the wet conditions spraying was delayed, but most areas saw the moisture as
beneficial. Early July brought hot, humid conditions, heightening concerns for disease in wheat.

Crop conditions throughout June and July remained mostly fair to good for both spring wheat and durum wheat.

SURVEY DESCRIPTION

The data in this report is based on the results of a June survey conducted by USDA's North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. The results were taken from a cross-section of North Dakota wheat producers. Just under 1,400 operators reported spring wheat, and nearly 450 reported durum wheat. Thank you to each person who supplied data and made this report possible.

Results include acreage and percentages at the state and Agricultural Statistics District levels. All variety data and planted district acreage in this publication are survey averages, not official estimates. The number of summarized reports produce highly reliable state averages. At the district level, the number of reports for minor varieties is generally limited, hence some of the yearly variation in the district averages may be the result of sample variation.

The North Dakota Wheat Commission and the North Dakota State University (NDSU) Agriculture Experiment Station provided supporting funds for this survey. The NDSU Extension Service provided variety descriptions. Free copies of the publication are available from the North Dakota Wheat Commission, 4023 State Street, Bismarck, ND 58503; telephone 701-328-5111.

SPRING WHEAT:

Russ was the most popular spring wheat variety for the second year in a row. It accounted for 17.7 percent of the spring wheat acres, compared to 19.4 percent last year. Russ was quite popular statewide and was the leading variety in the central district. Russ, a 1995 South Dakota release, has medium height and straw strength, and medium-early maturity rate.

Maintaining it's second place position was Gunner. Gunner accounted for 16.1 percent of the spring wheat acres, compared to 14.4 percent in 2000. It was the leading variety in the north central, northeast, and west central districts. Gunner has medium height, medium-strong straw strength, and medium maturity.

Oxen was the third most popular spring wheat variety in 2001 . It represented 8.1 percent of the total planted acres, down from 9.3 percent in 2000. Oxen is a semi-dwarf variety. It has strong straw strength and medium-early maturity.

Dropping from third in 2000 to fourth in 2001 was 2375. 2375 accounted for 6.8 percent of the spring wheat planted acres in this year, down from 13.7 percent in 2000. 2375 is described as being a semi-dwarf variety with medium straw strength and medium-early maturity.

WINTER WHEAT:

Arapahoe took over the top position of winter wheat varieties with 27.3 percent of the acres planted, up from 14.0 percent in 2000. It is described as having medium maturity, medium straw strength, medium height, and fair winter hardiness.

After 22 consecutive years as the number one variety, Roughrider dropped into second place. It accounted for 21.7 percent of the 160,000 winter wheat acres planted in North Dakota. Roughrider has medium maturity rate, medium-strong straw strength, medium height, and is rated as good quality with good winter hardiness.

Elkhorn
fell to third place with 17.0 percent of the planted winter wheat acres, down from 23.5 percent last year. Elkhorn is an average quality variety that is characterized by medium straw strength, medium height, medium maturity and good winter hardiness.

Nekota jumped from seventh place in 2000 to fourth this year with 8.6 percent of the planted acres.
