wheat graphic2000 North Dakota Wheat Varieties

July 21, 2000

HIGHLIGHTS

The leading 2000 North Dakota spring wheat varieties were Russ, Gunner, 2375, and Oxen. Of the 7.0 million spring wheat planted acres in North Dakota, the top four varieties accounted for 56.8 percent of the total.

Ben and Renville were again the first and second durum wheat varieties accounting for 50.6 percent of the durum acres planted in 2000. Munich placed third, while Monroe was fourth. These four varieties accounted for 72.0 percent of the 3.3 million durum acres planted.

Roughrider was the top winter wheat variety for the 22nd year with 26.3 percent of North Dakota's 110,000 acres planted. Elkhorn and Arapahoe were second and third. These three varieties represent 63.8 percent of the total acres planted.

GROWING SEASON, 2000

The average starting date for fieldwork was April 17 in 2000, April 22 last year and the five-year (1995-1999) average is April 27. The early starting date and mostly dry conditions in May allowed producers to complete planting ahead of average. Warm dry weather in early June stressed wheat in parts of the state. By mid-June widespread heavy rains fell across most of the state. The moisture was beneficial but the wet and humid conditions promoted leaf diseases and delayed spraying. Hot, humid conditions in early July heightened concern for disease. Crop conditions in late June and July remained mostly fair to good for both spring wheat and durum wheat.

SURVEY DESCRIPTION

This narrative presents the results of a June survey conducted by USDA's North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. The results were taken from a cross-section of North Dakota wheat producers. Approximately 1,430 farm operators reported spring wheat, and more than 650 reported durum wheat. Thank you to each person who supplied data and made this report possible.

Results include acreage and percentages at the state and Agricultural Statistics District levels. All variety data and planted district acreage in this publication are survey averages, not official estimates. The number of summarized reports produce highly reliable state averages. At a district level, the number of reports for minor varieties is generally limited, hence some of the yearly variation in the district averages may be the result of sample variation.

The North Dakota Wheat Commission and the North Dakota State University (NDSU) Agriculture Experiment Station provided supporting funds for this survey. The NDSU Extension Service provided variety descriptions. Free copies of the publication are available from the North Dakota Wheat Commission, 4023 State Street, Bismarck, ND 58503; telephone 701-328-5111.

SPRING WHEAT:

Russ was the most popular spring wheat variety in 2000, moving up from second in 1999. It accounted for 19.4 percent of the spring wheat acres, compared to 14.4 percent last year. Russ was planted statewide and was the leading variety in the central district. Russ, a 1995 South Dakota release, has medium height and straw strength, and medium-early maturity rate.

Moving from the fourth position to the second position was Gunner. Gunner accounted for 14.4 percent of the spring wheat acres, compared to 6.2 percent in 1999. It was the leading variety in the northwest, north central and northeast districts. Gunner has medium height, medium-strong straw strength, and medium maturity.

Dropping from first in 1999 to third in 2000 was 2375. 2375 accounted for 13.7 percent of the spring wheat planted acres in 2000, down from 25.5 percent in 1999. It was planted across most of the state and was the leading spring wheat variety in the east central district. 2375 is described as being a semi-dwarf variety with medium straw strength and medium-early maturity.

The fourth most popular variety for spring wheat in 2000 was Oxen, with 9.3 percent of the total planted acres, up from 6.1 percent in 1999. It was the leading variety planted in the southeast district. Oxen, a semi-dwarf variety, has strong straw strength and medium-early maturity.
