October 1, 1999
USDA's North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service designed and conducted a soybean variety survey for
the 1999 crop year. The survey was funded by the North Dakota Soybean Council. The Soybean Council and
the North Dakota State University Crop and Weed Science Department provided information about soybean
varieties and seed developers. The last soybean variety survey was conducted in 1994.
Soybean planted acreage in North Dakota has trended upward from 500,000 in 1990 to 1,500,000 in 1998
and 1999.
Survey Description
The data in this report was based on results of a survey of nearly 1,500 soybean producers.
Thank you
to each person who supplied data and made this report possible
. Results include acreage and percentages at
the state and zone level. Zones were deter-mined by maturity ratings and number of producer reports. All
variety data and planted acreage by zone in this publication are survey averages, not official estimates. The
number of summarized reports produced highly reliable state averages. Around 900 reports were summarized.
Reported acreage accounted for 29 percent of North Dakota's estimated 1.5 million soybean acres.
Planted soybean acreage was collected and summarized by individual public varieties and private seed
developers. Private
seed varieties were also divided between conventional and round-up ready soybeans.
Highlights
According to the survey, 77.7 percent of the 1999 soybean acres were planted with privately developed
varieties. This compared to 66.8 percent in 1994. Public varieties were planted on 19.6 percent of the
acreage, compared to 32.2 in 1994.
Mixed or unknown varieties accounted for 2.7 percent of the acreage in 1999, compared to 1.0 percent in 1994.
Private Varieties
Pioneer was the largest private seed provider for 1999, accounting for 42.2 percent of the total seeded
acreage for the state, down from 46.3 percent in 1994. The leading variety was Pioneer 9071 with 26.4 percent of the planted acreage.
Roundup ready soybeans accounted for 10.5 percent of the total seeded acreage for the state.
Public Varieties
Public soybean varieties were developed by state and/or federal institutions. The most popular public variety for the year was Traill, developed by North Dakota State University. Traill accounted for 4.4 percent of the total seeded acreage in the state. Council was second and Lambert third, accounting for 2.4 and 2.3 percent respectively.
