North Dakota continued to rank first in barley planted acreage in the United States, with 31.4
percent of the nation's total. Planted acres in North Dakota were 1.6 million in 2001, down
from 1.9 million in 2000.
This data was based on the results of a June survey of over 600 barley producers conducted by
the USDA's North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. The AMBA and the North Dakota
Barley Council provided supporting funds for the survey.
Robust remained the most popular barley variety in North Dakota. It comprised 80.3 percent of
the 1.6 million barley acres planted, up from 79.1 percent in 2000.
Conlon ranked second in 2001, up from third last year. It represented 5.7 percent of the total
barley acres planted.
Excel moved up to third place among malting barley, up from seventh in 2000. It represented
2.1 percent of all barley acres.
Stark moved up in ranking to the most popular feed barley variety and was ranked fifth among
all varieties with 1.8 percent of the total acres planted.
Bowman was the second most popular feed variety in 2001, sixth overall. Just over 28,000
